Consistent attendance is essential because each day of instruction builds on the last. Missing just one day equals about six hours of lost learning. Over time, those hours add up: 10 absences equal 60 hours lost, while 20 absences equal 120 hours—more than a full month of school.
By sixth grade, absenteeism patterns are a strong indicator of whether a student may eventually drop out of high school. Daily attendance is one of the most important factors in long-term academic success.
Every Day Counts Before Winter Break
As winter break approaches and families look forward to holiday celebrations, it’s important to remember that every day in school matters—especially in the days leading up to winter break. Missing even a few days can impact a child’s learning, confidence, and connection with classmates. Our high school students are especially impacted by absences as it directly affects final semester grades and graduation.
If these absences are unavoidable, please contact your school ahead of time to see what options may be available to support your child’s learning.
Family Liaisons: What Do They Do?
Family Liaisons are placed at the elementary level; shared across schools and are tasked with managing caseloads of students who experience the most chronic absenteeism. They partner with students and parents, providing guidance, encouragement, and access to resources supporting school attendance.
Helping families establish consistent routines or connecting families to community services are just two examples of how the family liaison can support MUSD families in improving attendance. The liaison’s role is to help support school attendance so every child can reach their highest potential. Families are encouraged to contact their school’s liaison whenever they need support.
Beyond Academics
Attendance is about consistency, such as routines, nutritious meals, and meaningful connections with teachers and peers. These consistencies are especially important in the winter months, when busy schedules and holiday activities can disrupt routines. Staying engaged with school helps children feel connected, supported, and confident heading into the new year.
At Madera Unified, strong partnerships between families, staff, and students are key. With the support of Family Liaisons and a shared commitment to regular attendance, every child can stay on track and finish the year strong.
As winter break approaches, let’s work together to make sure students are present and ready to learn every day. Every day counts, every lesson matters, and every student deserves the chance to shine.
