At Madera Unified, we believe that every child deserves the strongest possible start to their educational journey. That’s why we’re proud to share that for the 2025–2026 school year, Madera Unified is offering 39 Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms across 18 elementary school sites. This expansion represents a significant step forward in providing equitable access to early education for families across our community.
This year alone, we opened 10 new TK classrooms, including four brand-new buildings at Alpha, Lincoln, Pershing, and Virginia Lee Rose Elementary Schools. Each building was thoughtfully designed with the developmental needs of young children in mind—featuring spacious layouts, designated learning areas, and in-classroom restrooms to foster independence and confidence.
Why TK Matters
Madera Unified’s TK expansion is part of California’s statewide Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) initiative, which aims to provide all four-year-olds with access to a high-quality early education program. Research shows that children who attend high-quality early learning programs are better prepared for kindergarten, more likely to succeed academically long term, and develop stronger social-emotional skills.
Our TK classrooms reflect these goals by creating engaging, hands-on, play-based environments where children learn naturally through exploration and curiosity:
- Math and Science Exploration: Children discover geometry and measurement while building with blocks and experimenting with shapes and sizes.
- Social-Emotional Growth: In dramatic play areas—like running a pretend grocery store—students practice communication, cooperation, and problem-solving.
- Critical Thinking: Open-ended play encourages creativity and independence as children figure out how to balance, build, and solve challenges.
- Meaningful Learning: When children’s interests, such as dinosaurs, are used to teach literacy or math, learning becomes both fun and relevant.
Expanding Opportunities for Families
This year, nearly 700 four-year-olds are enrolled in Madera Unified’s TK classrooms, but we have the capacity to serve over 900 TK students. For many families, TK provides access to an educational setting earlier than ever before, supporting readiness for kindergarten while easing the transition into the K–12 system.
Funding through California’s Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) grant has been instrumental in making this work possible, allowing us to expand access to developmentally appropriate, high-quality programs for all eligible four-year-olds.
Our Commitment
At Madera Unified, we believe that investing in early childhood education is an investment in the future of our students, families, and community. The expansion of TK is more than just adding classrooms; it’s about ensuring every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to begin school with confidence, curiosity, and a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
We are proud of the progress made and confident that our TK program is laying the groundwork for academic success and equitable opportunities for all.
