As the Director of the Community Athletics & Recreation Department (C.A.R.D.) at Madera Unified School District, I’m thrilled to share the incredible impact our new department is making on the lives of our students and community.
The Need for C.A.R.D.
In recent years, we’ve witnessed a concerning trend among our youth. The pandemic has led to increased social isolation, with many students becoming detached from their peers and overly reliant on digital connections. This shift has resulted in a decline in physical activities and community engagement, creating a pressing need for intervention.
Our Mission and Approach
At C.A.R.D., we’re committed to reversing this trend and reigniting the passion for sports and community involvement among our young people. Our mission is clear: to build a lasting foundation centered around culture and unified expectations of support, skill-building, and sportsmanship. We aim to inspire greater levels of personal, team, school, and community excellence.
Programs and Participation
I’m proud to report that our efforts are already showing remarkable results. We’ve introduced a variety of free programs for MUSD students from kindergarten through sixth grade, including:
- Wrestling (475 registered students)
- Flag Football (900 registered students)
- Stunt and Tumbling (925 registered students)
- Little Hoopsters (basketball) (1,250 registered students)
- Futsal (Last year – 1,100 registered students)
- Girls Grass Volleyball (Last year – 450 registered students )
These numbers are a testament to the enthusiasm and engagement we’re fostering in our community.
Community Partnerships
We’re not stopping at school-based programs. C.A.R.D. has extended its support to community-based recreational programs like the Madera Babe Ruth League and Madera National Little League softball. By providing free registration, equipment, and uniforms to MUSD students, we’re ensuring that financial barriers don’t prevent participation.
Looking Ahead
Our vision for the future is even more exciting. In the 2025/26 school year, we’re planning to introduce golf, tennis, aquatics (water polo/swimming), and boxing programs. These additions will further diversify our offerings and provide even more opportunities for our students to discover their passions and develop their skills.
A Unique Approach
What we’re doing here in Madera Unified is truly unique in California. We’re proud to be at the forefront of this innovative approach to youth athletics and community engagement. By aligning our programs with varsity coaches’ expectations, we’re creating a seamless pathway for students to progress from elementary school sports to high school athletics.
The success of C.A.R.D. is a testament to the vision of Superintendent Todd Lile and the MUSD Governing Board. Their commitment to our students’ well-being and the community’s vitality has made this all possible. Together, we’re not just bringing back the love of community – we’re building a stronger, more connected Madera for generations to come.
