T
his quarter we built a truck in the agriculture lab. We were supposed to build a truck and bumper that would transport cranberries and would have the least amount of product spill in case of a crash. We researched bumper designs in English, learned about forces of motion in Science, and learned different tools and how to work with wood in agriculture. After completing our bumper design we did a test run and a lot of cranberries fell out. After the test run we added additional padding, and added a longer front that would hit the wall first, causing less of an impact for the truck. We also decided to go with a more compact design which ultimately allowed for zero cranberries to fall out. I really like this project; we learned about forces of motion and how bumpers help save peoples lives.

Este trimestre construimos un camión en el laboratorio de agricultura. Teníamos que construir un camión y un parachoques que transportara arándanos y que tuviera la menor cantidad de producto derramado en caso de accidente. Investigamos diseños de parachoques en inglés, aprendimos sobre fuerzas de movimiento en ciencias, y aprendimos diferentes herramientas y cómo trabajar con madera en agricultura. Después de diseñar nuestro parachoques, hicimos una prueba y se cayeron muchos arándanos. Después de la prueba, añadimos más acolchado y una parte delantera más larga para que golpeara primero la pared y el camión sufriera menos el impacto. También decidimos optar por un diseño más compacto que finalmente permitió que no se cayera ningún arándano. Me gustó mucho este proyecto; aprendimos sobre las fuerzas del movimiento y cómo los parachoques ayudan a salvar vidas.

We both worked on the truck but I helped design the flames. I made it look like Optimus Prime because I really like Transformers. On the outer layer we had to carefully cut the side fender so that it did not touch the tire. Touching the tire is cheating because it slows down the car, causing less of an impact. We used plenty of tape to attach our original front bumper design, which we named the “elephant trunk”. This allowed it to stay up and avoided it from dragging which would have also slowed down the car.
Los dos trabajamos en el camión, pero yo ayudé a diseñar las flamas. Hice que se pareciera a Optimus Prime porque me gustan mucho los Transformers. En la capa exterior tuvimos que cortar con cuidado el guardabarros lateral para que no tocara el neumático. Tocar el neumático es hacer trampa porque ralentiza el coche y causa menos impacto. Usamos mucha cinta adhesiva para fijar nuestro diseño original del parachoques delantero, al que llamamos “trompa de elefante.” Esto permitió que se mantuviera en pie y evitó que se arrastrara, lo que también habría ralentizado el coche.
I’ve really enjoyed my time at MadTEC and working on this project. We are actually doing something with our hands all the time. I love to cut wood, paint, wood stain, take measurements, sand, and everything else we do in the shop.
