y name is Lisa Delapeña, and I have been an employee with Madera Unified for the last 30 years. The year was 1992, and I was about to embark on one of the greatest experiences of my life. An experience that would allow me to share the best parts of who I am and positively impact lives. I was about to become a teacher.
Mi nombre es Lisa Delapeña y he sido empleada de el Unificado de Madera durante los últimos 30 años. El año era 1992 y estaba a punto de empezar una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida. Una experiencia que me permitiría compartir las mejores partes de lo que soy e impactar positivamente en las vidas. Estaba a punto de convertirme en maestra.
Although I did not grow up in Madera, I frequently visited family relatives growing up and made many neighborly connections. Madera became my second home. I was once asked why I chose to remain teaching in Madera, and my response was immediate; I fell in love with the families.
Aunque no crecí en Madera, con frecuencia visitaba a familiares mientras crecía e hice muchas conexiones. Madera se convirtió en mi segundo hogar. Una vez me preguntaron por qué elegí seguir enseñando en Madera y mi respuesta fue porque; me enamoré de las familias.
My classroom experience at Monroe Elementary allowed me to be part of some very incredible teams and endeavors. As 4th-grade teachers, we worked with, pioneer history teacher, Ed Gwartney to recreate a boomtown right on campus. I was privileged to be chosen as the saloon keeper, and we had a blast!!! With the creation of the Ed Gwartney California History Center, previously known as James Monroe Children’s Museum at Monroe elementary school, I shared my talents by bringing in the Mexican experience of the time period. I started a folklorico dance group and made costumes for the time period reflecting the hispanic influence of the 1840s. The experience of teaching 2nd through 4th grade while at Monroe Elementary, English Language Development (ELD) for grades 4th-6th, and having one of the very first ‘high tech classrooms’ for the 90s was incredible. I LOVED it! It was an honor to be part of the Monroe team and earn the recognition as a California Distinguished School.
Mi experiencia en el salón de la primaria Monroe me permitió ser parte de algunos equipos y esfuerzos muy increíbles. Como maestros de 4to grado, trabajamos con el maestro pionero de historia, Ed Gwartney, para recrear una comunidad en rápido crecimiento (boomtown) en el campus. Tuve el privilegio de ser elegida como la cuidadora del salón, y nos lo pasamos de maravilla! Con la creación del Centro de Historia de California Ed Gwartney, anteriormente conocido como el Museo de los Niños (James Monroe Children’s Museum) en la primaria Monroe. Compartí mis talentos al traer la experiencia mexicana de esa temporada. Comencé un grupo de danza folclórica e hice trajes para el período de tiempo que refleja la influencia hispana de la década de 1840. La experiencia de enseñar los grados 2do a 4to mientras estaba en la primaria Monroe, el desarollo de lenguaje de inglés (ELD) para los grados 4to a 6to, y tener una de los primeros “salones de alta tecnología” en los años de los 90s fue increíble. ¡ME ENCANTÓ! Fue un honor ser parte del equipo de Monroe y ganar el reconocimiento como Escuela Distinguida de California.
After seven years in the classroom, I went to work with Dr. Nancy Ahkavan as an English Language Arts Teacher on Special Assignment. SB 1292 required many of our MUSD staff to be certified in Specially designed academic instruction in English (SDAIE) and ELD and I took on the task of providing the professional development needed to keep our amazing teachers up to date with the latest instructional strategies for our English Learner population. I believed that by sharing my experiences and talents with classroom teachers, we could move our district forward, and my reach would extend to greater numbers of children through their own teachers.
Después de siete años en el salon, fui a trabajar con la Dra. Nancy Ahkavan como maestra de artes del lenguaje inglés en una asignación especial. SB 1292 requirió que muchos de nuestros empleados de MUSD estuvieran certificados en Instrucción académica especialmente diseñada en inglés (SDAIE) y ELD y asumí la tarea de proporcionar el desarrollo profesional necesario para mantener a nuestros increíbles maestros actualizados con las últimas estrategias de instrucción para nuestra población estudiantil de inglés. Creía que al compartir mis experiencias y talentos con los maestros, podríamos hacer avanzar a nuestro distrito, y mi alcance se extendería a un mayor número de niños a través de sus propios maestros.
Once that was completed, I embarked upon a 4-year journey that has always been dear to my heart; working in the Early Childhood Development world. As the MUSD Preschool Director, we earned for the very first time the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Accreditation Award. The entire preschool staff, Hilda Garnica, and I prided ourselves in the teaching and learning the 4-year-olds were accomplishing in preparation for Kindergarten. It was SUPER exciting!
Cuando se completó, me embarqué en un viaje de 4 años que siempre ha sido muy serca a mi corazón; trabajando en el mundo del Desarrollo de la Primera Infancia. Como Directora de Preescolar de MUSD, ganamos por primera vez el Premio de Acreditación de la Asociación Nacional para la Educación de Niños Pequeños (NAEYC). Todo el personal preescolar, Hilda Garnica, y yo nos sentimos orgullosas de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje que los niños de 4 años estaban logrando en preparación para el kínder. ¡Fue SÚPER emocionante!
The next biggest challenge of my educational career and one that has brought the most personal growth and the reward was moving into Administration. Berenda, Madison, Rose, and Pershing elementary schools are all fabulous places to build relationships and teach. Having high expectations and building people by teaching and leading with compassion has yielded one of the most joyous adventures of my lifetime. When I reflect upon my career, it has always been about the people; the children, the teachers, the support staff, my supervisors, the families. It is in providing a service that feeds my passion for leaving a legacy to others in seeking the best in themselves so they, in turn, will serve others.
El siguiente mayor obstáculo de mi carrera educativa y uno que ha traído el mayor crecimiento personal y la recompensa fue pasar a la Administración. Las primarias Berenda, Madison, Rose y Pershing son lugares fabulosos para construir relaciones y enseñar. Tener altas expectativas y elevar personas enseñando y liderando con compasión ha producido una de las aventuras más alegres de mi vida. Cuando reflexiono sobre mi carrera, siempre ha sido sobre las personas; los estudiantes, los maestros, el personal de apoyo, mis supervisores, y las familias. Es en proporcionar un servicio que alimenta mi pasión por dejar un legado a los demás en la búsqueda de lo mejor en sí mismos para que ellos tambien sirvan a los demás.
