FFA Student Wins State Star Award for SAE Project

hen I first joined FFA I never wanted to be involved in it, I thought FFA wasn’t for me and that I wouldn’t fit in. I thought it was going to be a waste of my time and I never tried to get involved. During my Sophomore year, my sister had told our advisor Ms. Luxon that I worked with my dad as a mechanic for the trucks and trailers at our family business. After my sister had told that to Ms. Luxon, Ms. Luxon then told me about SAE projects and how I should do one. She talked about how it would be a lot of work, but I could win awards. When she told me this I didn’t want to do an SAE project because I thought it was a waste of my time and there would be nothing in it for me, just a lot of work. She kept on asking me and telling me about proficiency awards and I finally agreed to do it. We met at lunch and she explained the process and what I would need to do. I had to do my record books and when they were finished, I started writing my application. I worked on my application all summer and had to take photos showing what I did at my job. It was fun showing Ms. Luxon what I did and showing her my job and I felt at home, I realized FFA was a place I belonged. In the spring I turned in my app and Ms. Luxon told me I would not win this year, but that the plan was to win my senior year. It was quite a shock when they called my name as the winner at the state convention. Winning state was a big step for me in my life and it meant a lot and I realized that FFA could be for everyone, even the kids that didn’t want to do it. It made me very thankful for my teachers and family cause without them I wouldn’t have been able to win.
Cuando me inscribí en FFA no quería participar, pensaba que FFA no era para mí y que no tendría éxito. Pensé que iba a ser un desperdicio de mi tiempo y nunca traté de participar. Durante mi segundo año, mi hermana le dijo a nuestra asesora, la Sra. Luxon, que yo trabajaba con mi padre como mecánico de camiones y tráileres en nuestro negocio familiar. Después de que mi hermana le contara eso a la Sra. Luxon, la Sra. Luxon me habló de los proyectos SAE y de cómo debería hacer uno. Me dijo que sería mucho trabajo, pero que podría ganar premios. Cuando me dijo esto, yo no quería hacer un proyecto SAE porque pensaba que era un desperdicio de mi tiempo y que no habría nada en él para mí, sólo un montón de trabajo. Ella siguió preguntándome y hablándome de los premios de aptitud y finalmente accedí a hacerlo. Comimos juntos y me explicó el proceso y lo que tenía que hacer. Tuve que hacer mis libros de registro y, cuando los terminé, empecé a escribir mi solicitud. Trabajé en mi solicitud todo el verano y tuve que hacer fotos mostrando lo que hacía en mi trabajo. Fue divertido mostrarle a la Sra. Luxon lo que hacía y mostrarle mi trabajo y me sentí como en casa, me di cuenta de que la FFA era un lugar al que pertenecía. En primavera entregué mi solicitud y la Sra. Luxon me dijo que no ganaría este año, pero que el plan era ganar en mi último año. Fue una gran sorpresa cuando me nombraron ganadora en la convención estatal. Ganar el estado fue un gran paso para mí en mi vida y significó mucho y me di cuenta de que FFA podría ser para todos, incluso los niños que no querían hacerlo. Me sentí muy agradecido a mis maestros y a mi familia, porque sin ellos no habría podido ganar.
After winning state then I had to send my application to the national contest and that meant more writing and working. I was super nervous to send my application and never something I thought I saw myself doing. In August, Ms. Luxon called me and told me I was chosen as one of the 4 national finalists. I didn’t believe it and I thought it was a dream and I kept pinching myself. It also meant a lot of work. I had to practice interviewing with people all over the state to get ready and then interviewed with industry people from around the country for the award. At the 2022 National Convention I was able to go on stage and receive my award, even though I didn’t win it was a big accomplishment. I was also asked to do an national SAE panel where I talked about my SAE in front of industry experts and FFA members. It was one of the scariest things I have ever done, I was so nervous that I forgot what high school I went to when I introduced myself.
Después de ganar el campeonato estatal, tuve que enviar mi solicitud al concurso nacional, lo que significaba escribir y trabajar más. Estaba súper nervioso por enviar mi solicitud y nunca fue algo que pensara que me vería haciendo. En agosto, la Sra. Luxon me llamó y me dijo que había sido elegido como uno de los 4 finalistas nacionales. No lo podía creer, pensaba que era un sueño y no paraba de pellizcarme. También significaba mucho trabajo. Tuve que practicar mis entrevistas con gente de todo el estado para prepararme y luego me entrevisté con gente del sector de todo el país para el premio. En la Convención Nacional de 2021 pude subir al escenario y recibir mi premio; aunque no gané, fue un gran logro. También me pidieron que hiciera un panel nacional SAE donde hablé de mi SAE frente a expertos de la industria y miembros de la FFA. Fue una de las cosas más aterradoras que he hecho nunca, estaba tan nerviosa que olvidé a qué instituto iba cuando me presenté.
This year I wasn’t able to do another proficiency award but Ms. Luxon asked me to run for State Star in Placement. Talking about my SAE is one of my favorite parts of FFA and where I am the most comfortable. Working with trucks and engines is what I am passionate about and being able to share it with people is something that I realized I liked doing. The application was different and I had to work on my record books a lot more, so they were perfect. When I was selected as the regional winner I had to interview two more times for the state. One was with the California FFA State Officers and I got the chance to show them around the business and had them do the things I do at work. It was an amazing experience to get to show people what I do and teach them how to do it. I was also interviewed by two industry experts who asked me questions about my job and what I do as well. I had to wait a month until State Conference to find out the results. On stage I was really nervous and didn’t think I would win. They showed videos of all 6 finalists projects and I didn’t feel like mine was good enough. When they called my name, my heart dropped and it didn’t feel real- almost like a movie.
Este año no pude hacer otro premio de competencia, pero la Sra. Luxon me pidió que me presentara para Estrella Estatal en Colocación. Hablar de mi SAE es una de mis partes favoritas de la FFA y donde me siento más cómodo. Trabajar con camiones y motores es lo que me apasiona y poder compartirlo con la gente es algo que me di cuenta que me gustaba hacer. La solicitud fue diferente y tuve que trabajar mucho más en mis libros de registro, así que fueron perfectos. Cuando me seleccionaron como ganadora regional tuve que entrevistarme dos veces más para el estatal. Una fue con los oficiales estatales de la FFA de California y tuve la oportunidad de enseñarles la empresa y de que hicieran las cosas que yo hago en el trabajo. Fue una experiencia increíble poder mostrar a la gente lo que hago y enseñarles cómo hacerlo. También me entrevisté con dos expertos del sector que me hicieron preguntas sobre mi trabajo y lo que hago. Tuve que esperar un mes hasta la Conferencia Estatal para conocer los resultados. En el escenario estaba muy nervioso y no creía que fuera a ganar. Proyectaron vídeos de los 6 proyectos finalistas y no me pareció que el mío fuera lo bastante bueno. Cuando dijeron mi nombre, me dio un vuelco el corazón y no parecía real, casi como una película.
I am extremely grateful for everything Ms. Luxon has done for me and for convincing me to do my SAE project and apply for awards because I don’t regret doing anything that I have done in FFA. We spent countless of hours working on my SAE project and the experiences changed my life. It led me to get more involved in the chapter, I started going to FFA events, joined the small engines team, and worked hard on my speaking and writing skills. It taught me a lot about myself and what I want to do with my future. Ms. Luxon always says “What would freshmen Arturo think about this?”. I think he wouldn’t believe what I have done. He didn’t even want to finish high school, let alone get involved in FFA.
Estoy muy agradecido por todo lo que la Sra. Luxon ha hecho por mí y por convencerme de hacer mi proyecto SAE y solicitar premios porque no me arrepiento de haber hecho nada de lo que he hecho en la FFA. Pasamos muchísimas horas trabajando en mi proyecto SAE y las experiencias cambiaron mi vida. Me llevó a involucrarme más en el capítulo, empecé a ir a eventos de la FFA, me uní al equipo de motores pequeños, trabajé duro en mis habilidades para hablar y escribir. Me enseñó mucho sobre mí mismo y sobre lo que quiero hacer con mi futuro. La Sra. Luxon siempre dice: “¿Qué pensaría de esto el estudiante de primer año Arturo?”. Creo que no creería lo que he hecho. Ni siquiera quería terminar la secundaria, y mucho menos involucrarse en la FFA.
