Karina Martinez

Recipient of the 2021 Loretta Edwards Classified Employee Award
By Samantha Foley, Communications Technician

The 2021 Loretta Edwards Classified Employee Award recognized Karina Martinez, School Safety Officer from Thomas Jefferson Middle School. This award recognizes outstanding classified staff who exemplify the District’s standards for excellence, high expectations, and are Student Champions. Award recipients must exhibit exceptional service, commitment to their school /department / students, involvement in the community, and leadership service. An employee’s supervisor or other management, classified or certificated staff, teacher, community member, or students may submit a nomination. Individuals are nominated to acknowledge those whose efforts have inspired and supported the achievements of students. From these nominations, MUSD awards three classified employees quarterly throughout the school year. These selections occur in October, January, and April. In May, a committee reviews all three award recipients and chooses one for the Lorette Edwards Classified Employee Award. Thomas Jefferson’s principal, Isabel Guzman, nominated Karina for her excellent leadership skills in the safety team through guidance and training. She has coached others on how to conduct home visits, and parent, and student phone calls properly. As a part of the Student Study Team, Karina works closely with students to find ways to support their success. She has taken the lead on Restorative Justice by attending professional developments and running inclusive community circles to create a positive climate and culture amongst students, teachers, and staff. Karina is critical to TJ, and her service has impacted the entire school. Congratulations, Karina, and thank you for your commitment to MUSD!
