Alpha Elementary School Teacher Battles Cancer / Maestro de la primaria Alpha lucha contra el cáncer

Energetic. Passionate. Perseverant. Those are the words I would use to describe Mark Phelps, a second-grade teacher at Alpha Elementary. Phelps has been teaching for 20 years and tackles each day as a new day.
Enérgico. Apasionado. Perseverante. Esas son las palabras que usaría para describir a Mark Phelps, un maestro de segundo grado en la primaria Alpha. Phelps ha estado enseñando durante 20 años y aborda cada día como un nuevo día.
He comes from a military family and has always imagined a career in civil service. Phelps spent nine years in the military with the Army and Air Force. While in the military, he was encouraged to go to college, where he completed his associate’s and later joined the police academy. He served as a cop for 14 years, but unfortunately was involved in a shooting and retired. He decided to go back to college and obtain his K-12 credential. Phelps shared that he never planned on being a teacher, but it just happened, and he instantly fell in love with teaching.
Viene de una familia militar y siempre ha imaginado una carrera en el servicio civil. Phelps pasó nueve años en el ejército con el Ejército y la Fuerza Aérea. Mientras estaba en el ejército, se le animó a ir a la universidad, donde completó su asociado y luego se unió a la academia de policía. Phelps was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in April 2011. He has active cancer but said no treatment is available until it gets “really bad.” Phelps states that there is a history of cancer in his family, and as a result, there’s been a pattern of family members dying at the age of 52. He did a happy dance and proudly said, “I beat the odds and am going to be 64 soon!” What is his secret for such a positive attitude despite all of his hardships? Phelps said his secret is, “if you can laugh at yourself and make light of the situation, nothing can bother you.”
Phelps fue diagnosticado con leucemia linfocítica crónica en abril de 2011. Tiene cáncer activo, pero dijo que no hay tratamiento disponible hasta que se pone “realmente malo”. Phelps afirma que hay antecedentes de cáncer en su familia y, como resultado, ha habido un patrón de miembros de la familia que mueren a la edad de 52 años. Hizo un baile feliz y dijo con orgullo: “Superé las probabilidades y voy a 64 pronto!” ¿Cuál es su secreto para una actitud tan positiva a pesar de todas sus dificultades? One of the many things that keep him going is his students. He said that he believes that their contagious youthful energy keeps him healthy. He shared that he could be in the worst mood, and their smiling faces change that instantly. “They remind me that I just need to move forward and keep going,” Phelps says. “When adversity strikes, you need to have faith in something. For me, it’s faith in family. Work is my family. My kids are my family. Knowing that teaching these kids will add value to them and then they can bring that to their families and their futures is all that matters.”
Una de las muchas cosas que lo mantienen en marcha son sus estudiantes. Dijo que cree que su contagiosa energía juvenil lo mantiene saludable. Compartió que podría estar del peor humor, y sus rostros sonrientes cambian eso al instante. “Me recuerdan que solo necesito seguir adelante y seguir adelante”, dice Phelps. “Cuando la adversidad golpea, necesitas tener fe en algo. Para mí, es la fe en la familia. El trabajo es mi familia. Mis hijos son mi familia. Saber que enseñarles a estos niños les agregará valor y que luego podrán aportar eso a sus familias y a su futuro es todo lo que importa”.
He wants to remind fellow educators that “these students come from various homes, and you need to understand them.” Phelps lives by the motto his dad, a Vietnam veteran, always tells him, “You don’t give up. You don’t surrender,” he said. “I’m still here because I still have a lot to offer.”
Quiere recordar a sus compañeros educadores que “estos estudiantes provienen de varios hogares y es necesario comprenderlos”. Phelps vive según el lema que su padre, un veterano de Vietnam, siempre le dice: “No te rindas. No te rindes”, dijo. “Todavía estoy aquí porque todavía tengo mucho que ofrecer”.
